"Meeting Held for Workers Exposed to Benzene"

August 27, 2007

Previous workers from the Celanese Plants, which are located through the Carolinas, met last week to hear about a proposal that may enable them to be part of a large compensation case.

900 former workers reunited, some in good spirits, other in mourning, to discuss the consequences of working at the plant and their exposure to benzene and other harmful chemicals.

Lawyers Encourage Workers to Speak Out

A group of lawyers who suspect the workers may have been wrongfully exposed to chemicals like benzene and toluene, encouraged the workers to take action while enabling them to share their stories of suffering and loss.

The Celriver plant, which most of the meeting attendees previously worked at, manufactured home furnishings, clothing and cigarette filters.

“We feel these workers have been wronged and deserve to be compensated,” explain the lawyers.

Employees Speak Out

“At night when I came home, you could still smell the chemicals in my clothes,” says Rachel Woodward, who was employed in the spinning department.

Woodward, who only lives a few blocks from the plant, says that as a result of her employment she developed asthma and is one of the few on her street that hasn't been diagnosed with or died from cancer.

James Perry who worked at the same plant as Woodward, explains, “I have a lot of friends from Celanese who are now diseased, and it kind of makes you wonder.”

Since hearing the workers statements and stories, lawyers are now working on sorting through the medical records and doing the necessary paperwork needed to ensure that the workers are compensated.
