
Benzene News"Widow of Laborer Files Suit Against 28 Corporations" April 10, 2008 A suit has been filed against 28 corporations by the widow of a laborer who recently died from an illness caused by exposure to benzene. The widow accuses her husband’s former employers of negligence and blames them for his wrongful death. Exposure to Benzene Costs Man His Life Joseph Kavich was reportedly employed as a pipefitter, boiler maker and plumber at various locations throughout Illinois, Montana, North Dakota, Wyoming and Texas before he became ill. In early 2007, Kavich was reportedly diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and died shortly after in July. Suit Details Violet Kavich filed the suit on behalf of her late husband and seeks damages in excess of $700,000. Among those named in the suit are Air Products and Chemicals, BP Products North America, Exxon Mobil, Morrison Construction Co., and BP Corp. Kavich claims that her husband was exposed to toxic chemicals during his employment, including benzene, and was forced to work with and around dangerous substances. She is seeking compensation for past and future medical expenses, loss of companionship and pain and suffering.
