Benzene Safety"Whitefish Fuel Leak" August 30, 2007 Samples that have been taken from the testing wells at a fuel seep located in the Whitefish River has shown that the contamination has most likely been caused by the Town Pump gas station. We think there's a connection between the seep and the Town Pump, explains John Arrigo, the administrator of the Department of Environmental Quality's Enforcement Division. Fuel Seep Causes Worry The fuel seep has been the cause of much concern over the past couple of years for city officials and residents. At a City Council meeting held last week, concerns increased when Whitefish Lake Institute Director Mike Koopal displayed bottles of the gasoline-ridden water. Immense Amounts of Benzene Found in Water According to Koopal, the water samples taken from the river contained 39 times the level permitted for drinking water. The limit for benzene in water is five parts per billion. Unexpected Leak In 2003 a tank leak was reported from the Town Pump gas station and officials believe this leak has impacted the levels of benzene that are now being found in the river water. While a source of the hydrocarbons is not yet known, Town Pump shares the city of Whitefish's concerns regarding the seep and has been working in cooperation with the Department of Environmental Quality to investigate the source further, says owner of the Town Pump, Kevin Kenneally.
