Benzene News"Contaminated Water Concerns Neighborhood" August 16, 2007 The residents on Rim Road are concerned about the groundwater they believe is causing many to become severely ill. Those living in the community say city officials are aware of the benzene-contaminated water but are failing to do anything about the problem. Grandmother Pleads Voices Concern Margaret Carpenter, who has lived on Rim Road for over 30 years, claims she has voiced her concern about the water contamination repeatedly to the community and officials. Carpenter became worried about the benzene problem after her husband was diagnosed with cancer and one of her neighbors was told she had breast cancer. They've already done a mastectomy. Now they're going to do a radical mastectomy because it has spread over into the other breast, explains carpenter. Water Unsafe The concern is over the cancer-causing chemical known as benzene. It's reportedly contaminated the groundwater and is caused by leaking that's happening in the underground storage tanks. Carpenter, who has several grandchildren and knows they love to play in the water, believes the contamination is a real threat and the city should be taking action. How long does it take to put down a water line? This is an emergency, says Carpenter. The City Council's Role In response to the residents concern, the city council recently voted to expand city water to the Rim Road residents. The move won't cleanup the contamination but it will supposedly provide the neighborhood with an alternative to the groundwater. We've lived with it so long and we don't foresee anything changing, says Carpenter. (Source: ABC) Have you or a loved one been exposed to benzene?
