"Utah Town Sues Gas Station"

March 24, 2008

The town of Gunnison recently filed a suit against a local gas station after more than 20,000 gallons of gas was allegedly spilled in the downtown area.

Residents fear that the benzene they are being exposed to as a result of the spill will have negative repercussions on their health.

Gas Spill Worries Residents

The lawsuit is accusing Wind River Petroleum, the parent company for the Top Stop store where the spill occurred, of trying to hide the massive leak from the community.

As a result of their negligence the suit claims that businesses have been closed down and families have been forced to move from their homes.

Several homes are reportedly “uninhabitable” and the property may never be useful again.

Town Takes Action

Several families, a local theater and bank have joined together to file the suit against the company.

“The spill was a catastrophe that caused monetary damage and potential health issues, and we believe Top Stop is legally responsible,” says Peter Stirba, the Attorney for the city.

The fumes that were released throughout Gunnison reportedly contained benzene, which is a known carcinogen and the town fears that the spill has put them and the town’s future in jeopardy.
