"Source of Emissions from Citgo Unknown"

June 19, 2008

Near Citgo’s refinery is an air monitor that’s been set up to detect the level of harmful emissions being transmitted from the site.

However, depending upon which way the wind blows, these tests are proving to be hard to determine and the level of benzene can vary.

Determining Benzene Levels

The variation of how much benzene is released is often attributed to two uncovered tanks at the Citgo refinery.

Citgo is currently facing criminal convictions for violating the Clean Air Act.

On days when the wind blows directly from the tanks, one monitor detected that benzene levels were 14 times higher than when it blew in the opposite direction.

Confusion About Benzene

According to attorneys for Citgo, it’s impossible to determine whether emissions are coming from the uncovered tanks or from other places.

However, many are claiming that they have gotten sick from living and even driving through the area due to thecontaminated air.
