"Toxicology Study in TX Reveals Benzene Presence"

September 4, 2008

A recent study conducted near Corpus Christi, Texas reveal that residents are potentially being exposed to benzene and other harmful chemicals.

The study conducted analyzed more than 100 Northside residents and concluded that local refineries could be having a detrimental effect on the community’s health.

Study Conducted Reveals New Findings

According to reports, blood and urine samples were taken from 100 residents living near refineries since last fall.

The study, which was conducted by Texas A&M University, found that a majority of the samples tested positive for benzene.

Results Cause for Concern

The samples were mainly taken and tested for benzene and other carcinogens that are known to be cancer causing.

This study was the first of its kind and its results were somewhat startling to researchers and the community, and rightfully so.

Benzene is a known carcinogen that has been linked to fatal forms of cancer like leukemia.

Community Takes Action

After the findings were revealed many turned their worry into action and the community is now joining together to do something about the benzene problem.

This week, residents will hear a presentation from the Citizens for Environmental Justice and they hope to get support from lawmakers to prevent this ongoing problem from worsening.
