"TX Estate Files Benzene Exposure Suit"

July 17, 2008

The estate of a man who recently died from myelogenous leukemia recently filed a suit against 15 corporations blaming them for his untimely death.

The suit says the man’s former employers were negligent and should have warned him about the potential harm his exposure to the benzene at work could cause.

Suit Names Former Employers as Defendants

Derek Rea was employed at various companies throughout Illinois during his career as a laborer.

While at work the suit says Rea was exposed to benzene and that the defendants knew or should haveknown the potential harm they were putting upon their employees.

Among the defendants named in the suit are:

  • BP Amoco Chemical
  • BP North America
  • Clark Refining
  • Chase Products

Lawsuit Claims

The state makes several allegations against the defendants for failing to exercise any caution for the victim’s safety.

According to court papers, the companies used benzene when safer alternatives were available and failed to provide safety equipment for Rea.

The defendants are also accused of failing to remove products containing benzene or informing their employees to stop using benzene even after discovering the dangers associated with the chemicals.
