Benzene News"Controversy Over Trash Burning in NY" August 11, 2006 The state of New York is currently getting an earful over their recent plan to ban the open burning of trash. The state Department of Environmental Conservation has reportedly proposed to ban the open burning of trash and brush throughout the state due to health concerns. Burning Trash Could be Toxic State officials claim that the burning of various types of trash, such as foam cups, plastic wrap and synthetic rubber could be toxic when inhaled. The risk of benzene exposure is high when burning trash, particularly with metals, and residents could suffer from health complications unless action is taken. Residents Claim Ban is Bogus According to reports, many New York residents are disputing a ban since it would serve as an inconvenience. “It would be a real hardship,” explains Lester Goodermote, a Rensselaer County legislator. “Some of these people are probably 15 miles from a recycling facility.” Benefits of the Ban However, environmental officials believe the ban will make the air cleaner by eliminating the emissions of benzene and other toxic chemicals. State regulators also think the ban will decrease the chances of wildfires and wish to mimic other states with such bands like New Jersey and California.
