Benzene Safety"Lane County Says “No” to Topping Off" October 11, 2007 Officials from Lane County in Oregon are trying to reduce the health risk caused by consumers “topping off” at the local gas stations. Topping off is seen as being seriously harmful seeing as it can boost the chances of exposure to harmful chemicals like benzene. Board of Commissioners Votes The Lane County Board of Commissions recently voted to encourage employees at gas stations throughout the county not to top off vehicles at the pump. “I think most people have no sense that they are being exposed to benzene at gasoline stations,” said Jim Goes from the county's community health advisory committee. Children At Risk According to a health official, the most serious risk is to children and gas-station attendants. Lisa Arkin, the executive director at the Oregon Toxics Alliance, says that children are particularly at risk because their bodies are still developing. Why It's Bad to “Top Off” When gas tanks are “topped off”, or filled past the shut-off point, benzene can get into the air. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency adopted restrictions on the benzene content in gasoline after discovering that oil refineries on the Pacific Northwest were producing high levels of the chemical.
