"Benzene Leak in TX Causes Injuries" August 7, 2008 According to recent reports, toxic chemicals were released into the air in Houston, Texas, from a local plant. The chemicals, which included benzene a known carcinogen, reportedly coated roads and sent dozens of nearby residents to the hospital. Goodyear Factory Leaks Benzene The chemical leak occurred at the Goodyear Tire & Rubber factory located in La Porte, near the city of Houston. Reports claim a safety valve at the plant released benzene and covered two more than two dozen cars in nearby neighborhoods with the fatal substance. Residents Feel Effects of Benzene Exposure Several local residents had to go to the hospital after having trouble breathing and feeling dizzy, symptoms attributed to their exposure to benzene. Benzene can often have a detrimental effect when exposed, causing a burning sensation to the eyes, nausea and a feeling of faintness. City officials are still unsure as to why the valve released the chemicals since it is designed to rupture when pressure inside builds too high. “Why it overpressured, that’s what we need to figure out,” says Jeff Suggs, the management coordinator for La Porte emergency.
