Benzene News"Benzene Found in Florida Well" April 16, 2008 Benzene Contaminates Tennessee Neighborhood According to reports, dangerous levels of benzene were recently found in the groundwater of a neighborhood in Franklin. Many residents believe that the benzene is coming from the same source that is responsible for releasing the other toxic chemicals that have been found in the Harpeth River. Company Blamed for Contamination Egyptian Lacquer Manufacturing Co. has reportedly admitted to leaking chemicals from underground pipes into the river. They claim that they are currently in the process of cleaning the site up; however, residents and health officials complain that the cleanup is taking too long. The company says that they found twice the amount of benzene than is permitted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Residents Voice Concern Health officials and residents in the community are growing increasingly concerned about the benzene they are being exposed to and the effect the chemical could ultimately have on them and their children. “I have two young daughters, so this very much concerns me,” states Scott Martin, who lives in the neighborhood next to the river. The company has supposedly given the town their word that they will continue in their efforts to clean up the river and prevent any further exposure from occurring.
