"EPA Reaches $200,000 Settlement with Sunoco"

July 10, 2008

According to reports, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently reached a settlement with Sunoco, Inc.

The settlement was the cause of past clean air violations the company allegedly violated at their manufacturing department in Philadelphia.

EPA Inspects Manufacturing Plant

In 2003, the EPA inspected the manufacturing plant and discovered the company was emitting hazardous pollutants, such as benzene, into the air.

Due to the findings, the EPA found that Sunoco was in violation of the Clean Air Act.

Among the violations the company was cited for are:

  • Meeting emission limits
  • Calculating and reporting emissions properly
  • Operating units in accordance with their permit
  • Keeping proper records

Settlement Terms

Court papers claim that as part of the settlement agreement between the company and the EPA, Sunoco has agreed to conduct performance tests on their equipment.

Testing is being done to ensure the equipment is in accordance with the Clean Air Act Violations and to ensure that local residents and employees are not being exposed to chemicals like benzene.
