State Sues for Benzene Clean-upAugust 10 , 2006 Former owners of a lid factory have failed to rid the 30-acre site of benzene-contaminated groundwater. A lawsuit filed by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) says the owners of a lid factory have not finished cleaning contaminated groundwater. The property, owned by two different companies, Owens-Illinois (1929-1988) and Anchor Hocking (1988-1998) was the site of a steel and aluminum lid factory, which discharged benzene into the ground during manufacturing. As a condition of the properties' sale to the current owner, Glassboro Associates, the previous owners consented to agreements with the state's DEP agreeing to decontaminate the soil and groundwater. Both companies have taken measures to clean up the site, such as removing polluted soil and underground storage tanks. However, despite their efforts, the contamination remains a problem. The state is suing to recover compensation for resources expended in clean up and investigative efforts. It is also asking for the completion of decontamination and other corrective measures.
