Benzene Safety"Benzene Found in Raritan River" October 10, 2007 The Edison Wetlands Association (EWA) recently found toxic chemicals like benzene in the Raritan River. The EWA contacted the chemical companies allegedly responsible for the river contamination, Basell Polyolefins and Akzo Chemical, but the companies have reportedly taken no action. EWA Plans to File Suit Officials from the EWA claim that the companies have taken no initiative to begin clean up at the river. Robert Spiegel, the executive director of the EWA says that they are preparing to file suit against the companies if nothing is done within the next 30 to 60 days. Chemicals Found The EWA claims they notified the companies of the river contamination when it was discovered last spring. In April, the EWA discovered the presence of benzene in the river, which is a common place for local residents to boat and fish. Since this discovery, the EWA claims that the chemical companies have done little to take care of the situation. The DEP has failed so miserably at this site, and the owners of the site have not done anything, so we're left with no alternative but to move forward and go to court, says Spiegel.
