Benzene News"Suit Filed Against Questar" March 10, 2008 According to reports, the U.S. Attorney’s Office has just filed a suit against Questar Corp. claiming that they violated the federal Clean Air Act. The violations reportedly took place at five of their natural gas compressor stations in Utah. Questar Under Fire Federal prosecutors claim that Questar Gas Management Co. has failed to control toxic air emissions. The compressor stations under question are Coyote Wash, Chapita, Island, Wonsits Valley and River Bend. All five of these plants reportedly lie on the boundaries of the Uintah-Ouray Indian Reservation, which means the EPA has regulatory control over the stations. EPA Voices Concern “What we’re seeing is unprecedented oil and gas development by not just Questar but many companies, and we’re concerned about the cumulative impact on the air quality in the region,” explains Jim Eppers, an attorney for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Legal Enforcement Program. The complaint claims that all five compressor stations have emitted benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene and other toxic air pollutants into the air.
