"Portland Residents Seek Benzene Study"

September 2, 2008

Residents in Portland, Oregon have requested a study be done in Columbia and Cowlitz Counties to determine the effects of industrial pollution on children.

The concern stems from the many industrial plants that are located within the counties that are emitting harmful chemicals like benzene on a daily basis and are thought to have caused health problems to local children.

Children at Risk

According to reports, three children, who all have attended the same school, developed a rare bone sparrow disease within the past year.

Since these children have become sick, health officials are now investigating how many instances of aplastic anemia have been reported in the region since 2006.

These recent reports and investigations have sparked concern for many parents and residents in general throughout the counties.

Investigations Conducted

Investigators have reportedly found seven cases of benzene related illnesses in the counties throughout the past 10 years.

Benzene is a known carcinogen that has been linked to leukemia and other deadly forms of cancers.

Many are attributing most of the exposure to the Emerald Kalama Chemical plant, which is known as one of Washington’s biggest waste producers.
