Benzene News"OR at High Risk of Benzene Exposure" July 24, 2008 According to recent reports from the state Department of Environmental Quality, the state of Oregon may be more susceptible to benzene exposure than other states in the U.S. Oregon’s gasoline supposedly has the highest levels of benzene in the country, most likely due to the fact that refineries in the north use Alaskan crude oil, which naturally has more benzene. Repercussions of Self-Serve Gas Stations Residents throughout the state have been writing letters to the government requesting that they be allowed to pump gas themselves to lower gas costs. However, many are unaware of the long-term cost pumping their own gasoline can have on their health. The EPA has recently been issuing statements claiming there is no “safe” amount of benzene exposure. Exposure to Blame for High Rates of Cancer? Oregon also reportedly has the highest rate of breast cancer cases and researchers are now wondering if exposure to chemicals like benzene could be to blame. Doctors say there is a direct link between benzene exposure and various types of cancer, but such issues are rarely talked about publicly. Though Lisa Arkin, the executive director of Oregon Toxins Alliance serves as an exception and is working to cite studies proving that children who live within a few blocks of gas stations are more likely to develop leukemia.
