"Health Officials Want to Hear from Public"

December 6, 2007

Health officials recently issued a report claiming that they want to hear from the public more on issues regarding carcinogens, such as benzene, affecting them.

Although linking human ailments to air pollution isn’t easy, they believe that the more people who step forward regarding how harmful substances in the environment have affected them, they will be able to target the problems more efficiently.

Presentation at Colorado Mountain College

Mark McMillan, an environmental health scientist at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment recently gave a presentation involving the growing concern between the hazardous chemicals being released into the environment and public health.

“We may not have the perfect answer around cause and effect, but we do want to respond and address that,” explained McMillan.

Most of his presentation focused on harmful chemicals like benzene and what scientists are doing to assess the health risks associated with them.

The Harm of Benzene

Benzene is a cancer-causing pollutant that many in the college town of Garfield are concerned about.

“It’s in thousands of processes,” explained McMillan.

Getting the Public Involved

Some of those in McMillan’s audience were worried about their own health and the various toxins that they’re exposed to with all the gas drilling that occurs in the town.

McMillan told his listeners that becoming involved, as a community, in air quality management, can make them more aware of the problems they face and prepare the town to better handle these issues.
