Benzene News"Attempts to Clean Oil Spill in New York" March 3, 2008 According to reports, an estimated 17 million gallons of oil have contaminated the ground in the past century from spills at ExxonMobil’s Greenpoint refineries and their storage facilities. The enormous spill has reportedly created a 55-acre plume of oil floating on top of the groundwater, has made many residents sick and put a community at risk. Cleanup Continues Vapors from the spill have supposedly been seeping into the basements and streets from Newtown Creek, where the petroleum goes into. A cleanup has reportedly been ongoing for decades but only half of the oil has been removed so far. Accelerating the Oil Removal Residents claim that until recently the government has taken no action to force an accelerated cleanup. “Keeping the oil out of Newtown Creek and pumping it out of the ground faster is just the tip of the iceberg. The groundwater and soil contamination and the soil vapor still needs to be addressed,” explains Basil Seggos, the chief investigator for Riverkeeper. ExxonMobil has supposedly added 10 new recovery wells to speed up the cleanup process. “A lot of people in this neighborhood are sick from the benzene exposure. Cancers, lupus,” says Laura Hoffman, one of the many residents who has filed a suit regarding the spill. (Source: Plenty Magazine) Have you been wrongfully exposed to benzene?
