Benzene News"Residents in North Carolina Concerned About Water" February 21, 2008 Residents in Cumberland County, North Carolina, are voicing their concern about the alleged contaminated water in the area. Those living in the neighboring counties have reported that there are cancer causing chemicals, like benzene, in their drinking water. Complaints Reported Throughout the State According to reports, residents living along Rim Road voiced their concern to Fayetteville last summer about the contaminated water and now those living along Chickenfoot Road are claiming that four of the major wells contain benzene. The EPA states that in 2007, there were 6, 063 benzene spills in the state of North Carolina. However, they promised that 4, 600 of these sites would be cleaned by the end of the year. The State Department of Environment and Natural Resources says that underground storage tanks are the number one cause of ground pollution in the state. Community Grows Concerned About Exposure Residents in these counties are reportedly becoming increasingly concerned about the water pollution since the Health Department informed them that benzene is cancerous. “It does make me worry, we have had two tests done and both of them have come back saying the water is clean,” explains Robert Stubbs, who lives on a contaminated site. “But with all that is going on now…it definitely piques my interest up more.” (Source: News 14 Carolina) Do you believe that you’ve been wrongfully exposed to benzene?
