"Cup of Noodle" Recalled in Japan Due to Benzene Contamination

October 30 , 2008

Nissin, a food manufacturer based in Japan, has recently issued a voluntary recall of its "Cup of Noodle" products after discovering that some of them contained paradichloro-benzene, a toxic substance found in bug repellants. This incident of benzene contamination was revealed after a 67-year old Japanese woman became ill after eating a Nissin Cup of Noodle.

While health officials didn't find any other abnormality with the contaminated Cup of Noodle, Nissin is recalling some 500,000 of these noodle soups to prevent others from possibly suffering from benzene poisoning.

The over half a million recalled noodles will take all products produced on the same day as the contaminated noodles off the market. To date, the only report of illness stemming from the contaminated noodles has come from Japan. None of these Cup of Noodles, according to Nissin, were exported to the U.S.

What is Benzene?

Benzene is a clear or pale yellow liquid that smells sweet, evaporates rapidly and is highly flammable. Derived from crude oil and/or coal, benzene is typically used to produce synthetic materials, including plastics, paints, dyes, insecticides, etc. However, while benzene has many useful applications, it is incredibly toxic if inhaled or ingested.

Effects of Benzene Exposure

The effects of benzene exposure will depend on the length of time an individual has had contact with this chemical.

If benzene exposure occurs over a short period of time, people will likely experience:

• disorientation
• drowsiness
• headaches
• loss of balance
• mood swings
• depression
• mania
• tremors
• unconsciousness
• vomiting
• irregular, rapid heartbeats

These side effects will typically dissipate once:

1. A person is no longer exposed to benzene; and

2. The benzene has been fully dispelled from his body.

However, if benzene exposure occurs for longer periods of time (generally over years), the effects are usually incurable and possibly fatal. Some of the side effects associated with long-term benzene exposure include:

• leukemia
• severe anemia
• immune system impairments
• irregular menstruation

Anyone who suspects (s)he has inhaled or consumed benzene should seek immediate medical attention.
