"County in NC Faces Water Trouble"

June 12, 2008

According to recent reports, residents in Cumberland County, NC, are currently facing a water crisis.

Many homes in Fayetteville are receiving water contaminated with benzene, which is putting several families at serious risk.

Water Supply Contaminated

Although some residents in the county are reportedly going to begin receiving publicly supplied water within the next few weeks, others may still be years away from getting healthy water.

The residents at risk are using well water that contains extremely high levels of benzene.

The process to hook up the 14 homes about to receive public water has supposedly been ongoing since January.

Commissioner Requests Count of Tainted Wells

Breeden Blackwell, the county’s commissioner, has requested that an accurate accounting of the tainted wells be taken.

Benzene and other nitrates have been found in the wells being used by several residents thus far.

“We have people in the county that can’t bathe; they cannot cook food with their water. They cannot even wash their clothes,” explained Blackwell.
