Benzene News"Missouri Community Concerned About Benzene" August 18, 2008 Residents living in Wildwood, Missouri are voicing their concerns regarding the city’s decision to build on a site that has been known to have benzene problems. A debate over what should or shouldn’t be done has begun involving an area of fields and woods in the community. City Approves Building on Superfund Site The area of land, known as the Superfund site, has contained signs warning developers of benzene problems and the potential of exposure to other chemicals for decades. However, city officials suddenly approved a small subdivision to be built on the land earlier this year. Residents and Developers Still Skeptical Though the city has given its approval, residents and developers are still questioning this decision and skeptical on the safety of the land. Many believe that a multinational company may have pressured the city and the decision was made without being tested for benzene.
