"Recovering the Water in Mission Valley"

February 25, 2008

According to reports, nearly all of the fuel consumed by the car’s in San Diego, along with trucks and passenger planes, is initially piped from Los Angeles to an industrial site in Mission Valley.

The industrial site, which sits just north of Qualcomm Stadium, consists of more than a dozen white tanks containing fuel.

Tanks Leaking for Years

The depot is owned by Kinder Morgan Energy Partners and has supposedly been serving as the region’s fuel warehouse since 1962.

At some point, which remains a mystery to city officials, fuel began seeping from these tanks into the groundwater aquifer that the city plans to tap for drinking water.

Not only has the water been polluted with fuel, but the soil surrounding the tanks also has and many fear that they are being exposed to benzene.

Kinder Morgan Responsible for Cleanup

Kinder Morgan is reportedly being help responsible for the cleanup; even though some believe that the pollution should have been removed before the company bought the property in 1998.

Emily Thompson, the company’s spokeswoman, says that the cleanup is running on time and the pollution has been reduced by 95 percent.

However, John Serrano, the deputy city attorney, says that the city thinks as much as a third of the pollution, 100,000 gallons of gasoline still remain.
