"Suits Filed Against Mercer Rubber Co."

November 5, 2007

Several families have filed a suit against the former Mercer Rubber Co. who claim that they developed cancer due to pollution coming from the factory.

Four different lawsuits have been filed by six plaintiffs have family members who have become sick because of the wastes that have been dumped near the factory.

Company Under Attack

Mercer Rubber, which has been manufacturing products for 130 years, was shut down in 1993.

Since then, the company and those who ran the factory including Carl Braus, the plant manager and William Sayen, the executor for the estate of the former owner, Frederick R. Sayen, have been under attack.

Lawsuit Filed

Terri Burd has filed a suit against the company on behalf of the estate of her late husband Paul Burd and Susan Fanella has filed for her husband Peter J. Fanella.

Lisa Glodowski sued on behalf of her daughter, Jessica, and Randall Fort, John Sheehan and Richard Soucey have all joined the suit.

The plaintiffs claim that their lost family members suffered from brain cancer, leukemia, and bladder cancer.

“Many drums of liquid were dumped onto the ground approximately 500 feet north of the Sayen House in the late 1960's and early 1970's,” states the suit.

The suit also claims that solid waste, referred to as “bulk rubber” was burned in the back of the factory, which contaminated the surrounding areas.

Residents in nearby neighborhoods claim they had to constantly clean the black soot from their homes and cars.

Government agencies reportedly found that the plant emitted carcinogenic substances and several cases of brain and central nervous system cancers were found amongst residents in the nearby town.
