"New Material to Help Eliminate Pollutants"

March 6, 2008

New research conducted at the University of Granada shows that a newly found material can eliminate harmful pollutants in the air.

Researchers managed to produce a material that they say will eliminate pollutants like benzene, xylene and toluene that are caused by traffic in cities.

New Material Offers Hope

The material, referred to as monolithic carbon aerogel, has the distinct advantage that it’s unable to retain any of these pollutants.

It can reportedly also be regenerated, meaning it can be reused in several cycles.

Study Conducted

The study was led by David Fairen Jiminez, from the Department of Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Granada.

The study analyzed the elimination of organic compounds like benzene that can cause harm to people and the environment.

Researchers found that it’s essential to use materials with a high concentration of micropores that are the right size and properly arranged.

The absorbent bed must also allow for sufficient contact for the elimination of the compound to take place while also avoiding any decrease in pressure.
