"Estate Claims Benzene Caused Leukemia"

April 7, 2008

A suit was recently filed by the estate of James Granat against 19 corporations claiming that his exposure to benzene was the reason he became severely ill.

As a result of his exposure, Granat reportedly developed myelodysplastic syndrome and acute myelogenous leukemia, which both attributed to his sudden death.

Exposure at Work

The complaint states that Granat worked for various employers in the printing industry and throughout Illinois.

During the time of his employment, Granat was supposedly exposed to benzene and other toxic chemicals.

The suit claims that Granat’s exposure was foreseeable and should have been anticipated by the defendants.

Lawsuit Claims

The suit makes several claims against the defendant companies, including:

  • Failing to provide adequate warnings to people living around the area
  • Using benzene in their products when adequate substitutes were available
  • The defendants failed to exercise ordinary care and caution for his safety, health and welfare.

The suit is seeking compensation in excess of $400,000 in compensatory damages and attorney fees.
