
Benzene Exposure Risk"LA Oil Refinery Settles Suit" August 28, 2008 A settlement was recently reached in the lawsuit against a Lake Charles oil refinery in Louisiana. The lawsuit accused the refinery of violating the Clean Air Act and the company is now being forced to pay $612, 500 in fees. Clean Air Act Violations Spark Suit The lawsuit was brought against Calcasieu Refining Co. by the Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Environmental Quality. The company was reportedly admitting an illegal amount of benzene and other harmful chemicals from their plant. Benzene has been lined to cancers like leukemia and can be fatal to those who are exposed on a daily basis. Settlement Reached and Company Fined Under the settlement, the company has been asked to install equipment that will reduce the amount of benzene and nitrogen oxide that is emitted into the air. According to Jane LaCour, senior environmental scientist at the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality, this revolutionary equipment is the latest in a nationwide effort to make refineries cleaner and safer.
