Benzene News"Lowering Amount of Benzene in Water" July 31, 2008 The city of Waverly in Iowa is reportedly making efforts to keep its drinking water safe from harmful chemicals like benzene. A recent study conducted by the Department of Natural Resources found that the level’s of chemicals and nitrate in the city’s water is on the higher side. City Officials Thinking Ahead The city’s wells reportedly tests at 7 parts per million according to hydrologist, Mike Gannon. This number falls slightly short of the EPA’s “action level” of 10 parts per million, which is supposedly when chemicals like benzene begin posing serious health threats to pregnant women and children’s circulatory systems. However, city officials believe that if they tackle the issue and learn from the surrounding cities, they could save themselves a potentially costly cleanup in the future. “We run into communities all across the state that don’t think about it too much until they have an enforcement action,” explains Gannon. “All of a sudden, they’re stuck with, ‘How do we pay for this?’” Dangers of Benzene in Water High levels of benzene and other chemicals in the city’s aquifer could essentially lead to more dangerous contamination in the drinking water in the city’s wells. City officials for Waverly plan on first reaching out to farmers and other private well owners in the community to keep them aware before the drinking water is directly impacted and action is taken.
