Benzene News"Iowa Question Emissions of Benzene in Clinton" August 14, 2008 Residents in Clinton County, Iowa, recently requested the state investigate benzene emissions from a storage tank in the community. The Iowa Department of Public Health has begun to study the amount of benzene being emitted from the tank. Normal Levels Detected According to the DPH, the there were minimal amounts of benzene in the air during the loading and unloading of the tank. However, investigators claim there were no measurements taken at other times with the initial equipment, which was used by the tank’s owner, Equistar. Reports say the estimated long-term exposure levels are well below the levels that are expected to produce adverse health effects. Long-Term Monitoring Suggested Despite these reports, Clinton residents still question how safe their community is and whether they are becoming victims of benzene exposure. The DPH has recommended that long-term monitoring be conducted using more sensitive equipment by Equistar in the future to ensure benzene levels don’t increase.
