Benzene News"Exposure to Incense Could Increase Cancer Risk" August 25, 2008 According to recent reports, exposure to burning incense over an extended period of time could raise the potential for cancer. A new study shows a link between incense exposure and cancers of the upper respiratory tract due to the fact that incense contains chemicals like benzene. Benzene Contained in Incense Incense burning products reportedly produce particulate matter that’s known to contain carcinogens like benzene and carbonyls. “The American Lung Association is going to add it as a risk factor,” says Dr. Norman Edelman, chief medical officer of the association. “It’s not as dangerous as smoking pack a day for 20 years, but it’s a danger.” Study Conducted Reveals Risks In a recent study, 61,000 people from the age of 45 to 74 were analyzed who had both been exposed to incense over a long period of time and those who didn’t. Researchers found an increased risk in both smokers and nonsmokers, which led them to conclude the risk was caused by the effect of incense smoke. “Anything that affects air quality negatively is not a good thing,” says Dr. Len Horvitz, a pulmonary specialist. “Burning in general and the release of smoke, these things are certainly to be avoided.” (Source: U.S. News) Have you become ill due to benzene exposure?
