Illinois Workplace Benzene Exposure Causes Leukemia

November 7, 2008

An Illinois woman recently filed a personal injury lawsuit against two chemical manufacturing firms, claiming that their negligence to protect her against benzene exposure contributed to her developing leukemia.

Paula Dangerfield, who was diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia nearly two years ago, worked for both Afton (from 1992 to 1993) and Reilly Industries (from 1995 to 1997). According to Dangerfield and her lawyers, both of these corporations were negligent in warning and protecting workers against benzene exposure.

While each had specially designated "benzene areas," neither chemical manufacturer provided workers with the proper gear to adequately protect them toxic benzene. Dangerfield and her lawyers are also alleging that:

• Neither corporation made essential repairs and/or adjustments in their factories to protect workers from harmful benzene exposure.

• Both failed to educate and warn their employees about the side effects of working with benzene.

Side Effects of Benzene Exposure

Benzene is a sugary-smelling, clear liquid that is derived from refined oil or coal. While benzene has a number of useful applications, as it is a key ingredient in plastics, paints and other synthetic materials, it can cause serious health problems if inhaled or ingested. Some of the immediate side effects of benzene exposure include:

• confusion and disorientation
• dizziness and loss of balance
• extreme fatigue
• headaches
• nausea
• tremors
• unconsciousness
• mood swings (including mania and/or depression)

Over extended periods of time, benzene exposure will result in irreversible, potentially fatal conditions, including:

• immune system deficiencies
• leukemia
• reproductive problems
• severe anemia

Because benzene readily dissolves in water, air and soil, just being close to this chemical is enough to result in toxic exposure and problematic side effects. To cover the costs of her medical bills, Dangerfield is pursuing a claim for over $200,000. Similarly, she is seeking damages that will compensate her for her suffering and her permanent inability to earn a living.
