"Lawsuit Blames IBM with Pollution"

January 3, 2008

A group of more than 90 current and former residents of Endicott, N.Y. filed a suit against IBM last week.

The suit claims that the company’s local manufacturing operations caused contamination throughout the environment, which caused many of them to get sick.

Suit Claims Benzene Exposure

The plaintiffs claim that IBM, which manufactured computers, circuit boards and other related goods between 1924 through 2002, failed to protect the residents living in surrounding areas from being harmed.

Many residents believe that during the time of operation for IBM, they were exposed to toxic substances like benzene.

Residents Blame IBM for Health Problems

Residents of Endicott claim they have several health problems that are the result of exposure to these harmful chemicals.

The lawsuit claims that IBM released and emitted chemicals from their plant and that substances like benzene leaked into the air and soil.

According to the suit, “the substances were contaminants and pollutants to the environment and constituted toxins to persons who became exposed to them through ingestion, inhalation, or absorption.”
