Benzene News"Rising Benzene Levels in Houston" April 3, 2008 Mayor Bill White of Houston, Texas supposedly challenged the city’s chemical industry to decrease the amount of benzene they emit and guaranteed that punitive measures would be taken if it failed to do so. However, since this time, the levels of toxic chemicals in the area haven’t decreased or even stayed the same; instead they have been on the rise. High Levels of Benzene Found According to data retrieved by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, 13 air monitors that track benzene in the surrounding areas of the city detected increased concentrations of benzene. The amount found reportedly exceeded healthy levels. “It’s not looking good,” stated Elena Marks, the mayor’s health policy director. City Becomes Increasingly Worried Health officials say that the measurements of benzene levels found are not good for residents who are breathing the region’s air. “The mayor has promised to applaud industry for benzene reductions,” says Russ Roberts, a spokesman for the East Harris County Manufacturer’s Association. “If those aren’t numbers that can be applauded, then I’m not sure what we can do for the city of Houston.” However, according to Dan McGowan, spokesman for the Texas Chemical Counsel, in the past two decades, the amount of benzene in Houston’s air has reportedly risen from three parts per billion to less than 1 part per billion.
