"Houston Mayor Works to Eliminate Benzene"

May 29 , 2008

Earlier this week, Mayor Bill White of Houston, TX, reiterated his plan to crack down on the petrochemical industry.

The industry continues to be negligent regarding benzene emissions and White is calling on plants throughout the city to publicly work together to eliminate the toxin from the air.

Benzene Levels Still High in Texas

White acknowledged at a recent conference that some sites in the Houston Ship channel area have recorded a decrease in benzene levels.

However, he went on to explain that these levels still don’t’ meet his health risk standard.

Mayor Calls Other to Action

At the conference, White also called on the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) and Ship Channel Plants to take action to eliminate the amount of benzene in the city.

“TCEQ should immediately require industry to say how much benzene it plans to put in the air,” said White.

Goals Set

White introduced goals that he would like to be met in terms of the benzene problem, including:

  • Asking the largest emitters of benzene to set annual goals for how much is released and submit six-month progress reports
  • Ask the companies to install fence-line monitors for local residents
  • Begin taking polluters to court
