Benzene Exposure RiskTexas Study Examines Benzene Exposure November 14, 2008 A recent study conducted by the Texas A&M School of Public Health and the Citizens for Environmental Justice has found that those living in Hillcrest, Texas have up to 280 times more benzene in their systems than the general population. This study, which will also examine benzene levels in Harris County residents, is the first of its kind in that it is taking a local look at how neighbors bordering "Refinery Row" are affected by these industries' toxic benzene emissions. Refinery Row refers to a strip of 16 refineries and industrial plants that are concentrated in Corpus Christi on the Gulf Coast of Texas. Hillcrest is a smaller neighborhood that borders Refinery Row in Corpus Christi. Side Effects of Benzene ExposureBenzene, a clear liquid derived from crude oil, is a widely used in paints, dyes, degreasers and various other synthetic substances. However, when inhaled or ingested, benzene is highly toxic and, over time, can cause incurable health conditions, including: • anemia Those who have the highest risk of experiencing toxic benzene exposure include: • gas station employees Opposition to the StudyInterestingly, some critics have balked at the results of this study, stating that: • Not enough participants were included, as the initial phase of the study (which focused on Hillcrest residents) only included 100 participants. • It's difficult to read the study's results, as "safe/normal levels of benzene" in the body have yet to be identified. Yet, while further research clearly needs to define how toxic particular levels of benzene are, it is apparent that people should minimize or avoid benzene exposure, when possible, to reduce their risk of serious, potentially fatal health problems. Future of This Benzene StudyThe next phase of this benzene study will focus on examining the levels of benzene in residents of Harris County, which is also located next to Refinery Row. Although researchers had planned on also studying those living in Nueces County, this third phase of research may be postponed due to lack of funds. Regardless of whether the third phase is completed, researchers hope that their work will spark industries' interest in either buying the homes in neighboring towns (to prevent future lawsuits) or in improving their processes to significantly reduce neighbors' toxic benzene exposure.
