"Health Hazards Near Wells"

June 23, 2008

According to reports, a study which was conducted over a two-year period found that people who live near oil and gas operations are at a higher risk of health problems.

Researchers found that exposure to benzene, a known carcinogen, was the most common hazard among those who lived near gas facilities.

Study Reveals Risks

The study revealed that those who live farther from gas operations are less likely to be exposed to benzene and other harmful toxins.

Teresa Coons, a senior scientist for the Saccomanno Research Institute was one of the lead researchers on the study.

Russell Walker, who also worked on the study, claimed they found the benzene exposure could be significant up to a hundred of yards from the gas operations.

Using Technology to Regulate Benzene Emissions

Walker says that if technologies are used towards this cause, benzene could be reduced by an estimated 90 percent.

New technology is reportedly in the works to create new rules for the state’s oil and gas industry.
