Benzene News"Two CT Refineries Reach $16M Settlement" August 4 , 2008 Two refineries in Connecticut recently reached a $16 million settlement in the ongoing suit involving a plume of gasoline that lies beneath the city of Hartford. The suit was filed by residents of Hartford who believe their health was put at risk and they were being exposed to benzene. Residents Exposed to Benzene The settled case has reportedly been in the works for five years and the defendants named in the suit are Premcor and Equilon. Residents became most aware of the underground toxic mess that exists in Hartford during wet weather when gasoline and vapors rest on the groundwater beneath the city. Although some cleanup work has already started, the prevalence of benzene and other hazardous chemicals is supposedly well-known. Jury Settles Case In the case, residents sought damages for loss of property value, loss of enjoyment, and for possible medical expenses they will be forced to pay in the future. “People are going to start receiving checks any day,” states Mark Goldenberg, one of the attorneys involved in the suit. The jury’s decision to settle in favor of the residents of Hartford came after a large amount of scientific information proving the benzene problem exists was presented to them. Benzene is a known carcinogen that can lead to severe health complications when inhaled or exposed to in other ways. (Source: The Telegraph) Have you or someone you know been exposed to benzene?
