The group is called the Citizens Organized for Pipeline Safety (COPS) and they’ve been working to address health concerns that have formed from a series of spills at the Colonial Pipeline. Company Fined After Spills In 2003 the EPA supposedly issued one of its biggest fines at Colonial pipeline and the company was forced to pay about $30 million to get increased inspections and monitoring along the pipelines. In addition, they reportedly paid $34 million in fines. “Three pipelines go through Madison County and the three pipelines follow each other through Georgia. Everyone of these pipelines has had a major spill in Madison County…this should be a red zone alert county,” says Richard Bennett, who lives near the pipelines. Residents Have Health Concerns Although the company is striving to make the pipelines and the surrounding environments safer, residents are still concerned that they’re being exposed to benzene and other harmful chemicals. In the last 19 years, an estimated 1,200 incidents of deaths and serious injuries have been reported in the U.S. (Source: OnlineAthens) Have you been exposed to benzene?
