"Study Analyzes the Effects of Freeway Pollution"

October 29, 2007

A new study conducted by Linda George, a professor from Portland State, shows that residents living close to freeways are being exposed to higher levels of pollutants, like Benzene, than are safe.

George and her colleagues focused on the neighborhood-scale air-quality modeling, which monitors air quality by taking readings near a suspected pollution source.

Neighborhoods Near Freeways at Risk

The study found that the numbers of pollutants in the air are much higher than the state-recommended levels.

“Freeways are a major pollution source due to high vehicle density,” says George. “ The closer you are to a pollution source the greater your exposure to pollution.”

How the Study Was Conducted

George conducted her study on freeway air pollution using diffusion tubes that are used to collect and analyze samples of air from various affected areas.

The tubes were left as various points on the highway and collected after a two-week period.

The tubes were created to pick up nitrogen dioxide and other harmful substances, like benzene.

“My models show a huge concentration of pollutants along the freeway, with the concentration decreasing as we move away from it,” stated George.

High Levels of Benzene Found

A similar study conducted by Dean Atkinson, the associate professor of chemistry at PSU, reportedly found that the average Benzene levels around the Portland freeways were five times the state-recommended level.

According to both Atkinson and George, the level of Benzene found was only an average and there are certain areas with much higher levels than even what was found.
