Benzene News"Four Refineries Named in Benzene Suit" February 28, 2008 The wife of a refinery worker who recently died of leukemia has filed a suit against four refineries in Colorado. The widow is blamed the companies for negligently exposing her husband to benzene. Exposure to Benzene in the Workplace Olevia Watson filed the suit on behalf of her late husband, Arthur Watson this week. Among the companies named in the suit are Total Petrochemicals USA, Atlantic Richfield Co., BP Amoco and BP Products North America. Watson was supposedly employed by Fina in Texas when he became the victim of benzene exposure. “During his employment he used and was exposed to toxic and carcinogenic benzene and benzene containing products,” claims the suit. Leukemia Takes Man’s Life According to the suit, Watson eventually developed leukemia due to his exposure at work and died a “terrible and painful” death in 2006. “The defendants knew for decades that benzene could cause deadly blood conditions and/or cancers and still allowed their employees to work with and around such products in the workplace,” says the suit. The companies are being accused of failing to warn their workers of the dangers of benzene. (Source: The Southeast Texas Record) Have you or someone you know been wrongfully exposed to benzene?
