"Benzene Found in Florida Well"

April 14, 2008

According to reports, benzene was recently found at a county water treatment facility in Florida.

The contamination was reportedly coming from the Northwest Wellfield, which supplies the drinking water to most of the county.

Water Contaminated

Health officials found that one of the wells in the county contained benzene levels that were five times the limit that’s established by the Environmental Protection Agency.

The director of Miami-Dade County Water and Sewer Department, Bill Brant, forced the contaminated well to be shut down.

“Benzene didn’t belong in our wellfield,” says Brant, “we were very alarmed.”

The Importance of Clean Water

Health officials explain that South Florida depends solely on one source for all their water supply: the Biscayne Aquifer.

In an attempt to protect the community from harmful toxins like Benzene, Brant and his colleagues produced a plant that would hopefully prevent such contamination.

“The approach has always been not to rely on any kind of a water treatment plan, but to look at it as a back-up system and always keep the water supply itself, the groundwater supply, pure,” says Brant.

However, as they later found their plan wasn’t as successful as it should have been.
