"FL Residents Fear Benzene Exposure" June 26, 2008 According to reports, crews digging trenches to install water lines to city residents in Tallevast, Florida may be ordered to stop due to resident complaints. Local residents have voiced their concern to the city regarding the water line installation and the results of air and soil tests that were recently revealed. Benzene Found The cause of concern for residents is the benzene that was reportedly found after tests were taken measuring the air and water quality. The tests also revealed the presence of acetone and toluene, as well as condensation in the piping and ill-fitting valves. Request for Installation to be Postponed Temporary water lines were reportedly installed in 2004 to homes that relied heavily on private wells after tests confirmed contamination. Residents are now requesting that the installation of permanent pipes be postponed due to concerns regarding the disturbance of toxic vapors. “All we were asking for was just one day to get the samples redone,” says Wanda Washington, the vice president of the resident advocacy group, FOCUS.
