
Benzene Safety"Area Refiner Fined for Releasing Benzene" September 13, 2007 Flint Hills Resources was recently fined $2, 740 by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality for releasing harmful chemicals into the air. According to reports, more than 900 pounds of sulfur dioxide and around 69 pounds of benzene were released into the air. The Violation The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality fined the area refiner for failing to prevent the harmful release from occurring. This is among the 69 regulated entities reported to the agency. The total amount fined for the other violations total $516,606. Other Fines in the Area Other companies in the surrounding area were also fined for similar violations. Packard Tire Service was fined $1,920 for also releasing the carcinogen, benzene, into the air. The release reportedly came from two flares and the hydrocracker unit. Plans for the Future Spokeswoman for the Flint Hills refinery, Katie Stavinoha, claims that the company now requires their personnel to review their decommissioning procedures to ensure that this a similar release doesn't occur in the future.
