Benzene News"ExxonMobil Provides Payouts" May 8, 2008 Reports claim that ExxonMobil has agreed to expand its offer of financial assistance to more people. The oil company is providing assistance to residents living in Torrance, CA, who have been affected by the benzene contaminated surrounding their homes. Contaminated Soil Threatens Homes The soil in the Torrance neighborhood reportedly became contaminated from an oil spill that occurred at an ExxonMobil refinery. The company first offered to buy 10 of the homes in the community that were sitting on soil contaminated with benzene. However, ExxonMobil recently announced that they would buy nine other refineries nearby as well. Homeowners Filed Complaints According to reports, at least one homeowner has complained that she is unable to sell her property in the area because potential buyers have heard about the spill. Steven Hariri, senior hazardous substance engineer for the Department of Toxic Substances Control, says that vapor levels in Torrance are 160,000 parts per billion for benzene and up to 500,000 parts per million for methane. For this reason, the oil company has offered to buy out those homeowners living in the most contaminated areas. (Source: Daily Breeze) Has your family been wrongfully exposed to benzene?
