"Exhaled Breath Could Determine Exposure"

July 14, 2008

According to a recent research from scientists, when people exhale their breath can show a great deal about their health.

The study’s findings are promising since doctors may now have another way to determine if patients are suffering from any unknown health complications or being exposed to dangerous chemicals like benzene.

Collecting and Analyzing Breath Beneficial

In recent years, researchers have been collecting and analyzing breath samples to help better understand a variety of health issues including sleep apnea and cancer.

However, they have no found that breath can also reveal exposure to pollutants like benzene and chloroform.

Samples taken from breath to determine benzene exposure can reportedly provide a better measure of the internal dose that can often be missed by polluted air.

“The breath is a window into the blood,” says Joachim D. Pleil, a chemist who works for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Breath Analysis Continues to be Researched

Although scientists are still determining which breath molecules are most important and what methods work best, they have discovered that taking breath samples can be very beneficial.

Such samples can help determine what chemicals, like benzene, a person is being exposed to on a daily basis as well as whether or not they are at risk for certain health problems.
