Benzene News"EWA Files Suit Claiming Toxic Pollution" January 28, 2008 A suit was recently filed by the Edison Wetlands Association (EWA) against the former and current owners of a chemical factory in New Jersey. The factory is believed to be seeping toxic chemicals into the Raritan River, which sits just feet away from the Edison Boat Basin. Lawsuit Allegations The lawsuit accuses Akzo Nobel Chemicals Inc. and Basell USA Inc. of violating the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act by permitting high levels of the carcinogen benzene to seep into the soil surrounding the plant. The EWA says they discovered the benzene problem after an immense odor began encompassing the area. Water and soil tests conducted by Chapin Engineering, and environmental and engineering firm, supposedly found unsafe amounts of benzene in the water that was going into the river from the plant. Community at Risk According to Robert Spiegel, executive director for the EWA, hundreds of people use the Edison Boat Basin annually to fish, boat, and swim. “We want to eliminate this imminent threat to human health and the environment,” explained Spiegel.
