Benzene News"Homeowners Exposed to Benzene Take Action" May 19, 2008 DEP Tests Wells for Benzene According to reports, state labs in PA are testing 20 private wells near the Hidden Valley landfill for benzene and other harmful carcinogens. Researchers will reportedly be looking for highly toxic benzene, iron and ammonia in the wells. Benzene Detected in Samples Benzene, which is a known carcinogen, was supposedly detected in leachate that has been dispensed from several wells in the area. Dennis Harney, a spokesman for the state Department of Environmental Protection, has reported that the substances are being discharged from a tributary of Gallows Run close to the county landfill. “There were five organic materials detected in the sample,” Harney explained. Water Contaminated “Although most public drinking water supplies are free of benzene, exposure can still be very high from the consumption of contaminated sources drawn from wells contaminated by leaky gasoline storage tanks,” says an official from the EPA. Other substances that were found in the leachate included chlorobenzene, dichlorobenzene and tetrohydrofuran.
