"Suit Blames Columbia Gas for Contamination"

November 15, 2007

Two attorneys recently filed a lawsuit against Columbia Gas Transmission Corporation.

The suit was filed on behalf of a man and the attorneys hope that the case will be given class-action status.

Lawsuit Filed

Tim J. Yianne and Harry F. Bell Jr. filed the suit on behalf of Emogene Helmick against Colombia Gas.

The suit claims that Columbia has operated a natural gas pipeline system in the northeastern part of the U.S. since the 1890's and now has 12,750 miles of pipeline and natural gas storage fields.

“As a result of normal pressure and temperature changes within Columbia's pipeline, constituents contained in natural gas can condense into a liquid form within the pipeline,” says the suit. “ This liquid may contain, among other things, benzene and xylene. Condensates must be removed to avoid damage to the gas compressors.”

Helmick is seeking damages and relief for the property damage that has allegedly been caused by the contamination from Columbia Gas pipelines that are located on her property.

The suit goes on to say that the liquid was disposed into the ground and stored in aboveground and underground storage tanks.

Landowner Outraged

According to Helmick, the contaminants “have created a hazardous and dangerous living condition” on her property.

She also claims that they have caused a diminution in property value and have been both a public and private nuisance for her.
